André Baleiro is the winner of the Emmerich Smola “SWR Young Opera Stars” 2019 Award, the 17th International R. Schumann Competition, the Prize for “Most Promising Talent” at the prestigious DAS LIED competition in Heidelberg, and 2nd Prizewinner of the Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition 2021 in Vienna.
His operatic highlights include TARQUINIUS in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia at Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon, FIGARO in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and KASPAR in the new opera Kaspar Hauser (Schubert/Wilgenbus) with the Kammeroper München, and DON PARMENIONE in Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro in Teatro Perez Galdos in Las Palmas.
In 2022/2022 Baleiro debuted the roles of VALENTIN in Gounod’s Faust, ORPHÉE in Philip Glass’ Orphée and PELLÉAS in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande.
A great versatility and security of style enables Baleiro to sing a wide range of repertoire from the baroque masterworks to the demanding new works of the present day. His concert repertoire includes Monteverdi’s VESPRO DELLA BEATA VERGINE, Bach’s PASSIONS and CANTATAS, Händel’s DIXIT DOMINUS and TE DEUM, Dvorak’s MASS in D, REQUIEMS of Fauré, Duruflé and Brahms, Ravel’s DON QUICHOTTE À DULCINÉE, Vaughan Williams’ DONA NOBIS PACEM, Berlioz’ L’ENFANCE DU CHRIST, and A. Schönberg’s GURRE-LIEDER.
He has collaborated with conductors such as Michel Corboz, Steffan Blunier, Frédéric Chaslin, Greahme Jenkins, Martin André, Moritz Gnann, Antonio Pirolli, Andreas Spering, Joana Carneiro, Nabil Shehata and Lorenzo Viotti.
Baleiro also enjoys a significant activity as a recitalist, focusing not only on the great works of the 19th and early 20th century, but also in contemporary and modern music. Besides his solid partnership with the pianists David Santos and Pedro Costa, Baleiro also collaborates regularly with Axel Bauni and Jan Philip Schulze with whom he has premiered numerous works for voice and piano from celebrated composers at the Festival Kissinger Sommer.
The Portuguese baritone was born in Lisbon, where he began his musical studies at the age of 10 at the Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa. After completing his degree in Choral Conducting at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, Baleiro moved to Berlin to study singing at the University of the Arts under the tuition of Kammersänger Siegfried Lorenz, with scholarships from the Walter & Charlotte Hamel Foundation in Hannover and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. Moreover, he has attended masterclasses with acclaimed singers such as Tom Krause, Ian Bostridge, Lorenzo Regazzo and José van Dam. Currently he proceeds his artistic and technical development with Prof. Snežena Stamenković in Mannheim.
