Jean Halsdorf studied music in Luxembourg, Cologne, Rome and Basel where he obtained his Diploma as a cello soloist in the class of Ivan Monighetti. He was a member of the Orchestre Mondial des Jeunesses Musicales and the Youth Orchestra of the European Union. From1996 to 2002, he was principal cello of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada (Spain).

From 2002 to 2021, he was Music Director of the Ensemble de la Chapelle Saint-Marc, with which he explored a vast repertoire on modern instruments before devoting himself exclusively to the interpretation of Baroque music on historical instruments. He has conducted at the Philharmonie and the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, the Opéra-Théâtre de Metz, the Kursaal in San Sebastián and the Auditorio nacional in Madrid in opera, ballet and symphonic music productions.

Composition is another important aspect of his activity: his Concerto for violin and string orchestra, a work written for the tenth anniversary of the Ensemble de la Chapelle Saint-Marc, his trio for flute, harp and cello Vergangenes as well as most recently his Chaconne (not by Bach) for solo cello have been premiered with great success at the Philharmonie Luxembourg. He has also received commissions from the Brücken Ensemble Basel, the Ensemble Pyramide Zurich and Noise Watchers Unlimited.

Eager to put his experience to the benefit of the younger generation, Jean Halsdorf is professor of cello and chamber music at the Conservatoire de la ville d'Esch-sur-Alzette, an institution of which he was recently appointed director.
